1 Elul 5772 – Rosh Chodesh - the new moon:  Moses ascends Mount Sinai and stays 40 days

August 19

1 Elul 5772 – Rosh Chodesh - the new moon

On this day: Moses ascends Mount Sinai and stays 40 days until 10 Tishrei, Yom Kippur, when he brings down the second tablets.

40 days until you put up your sukkah!  Your Sukkah Soul sukkah!

The 40 days between Rosh Chodesh Elul and 10 Tishrei is a time of reconciliation, a time of repentance and forgiveness.

From 1948 until his death in 1985, Chagall lived in France.  In 1950, he moved to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in the Cote d’Azur and in 1952 he married for a second time.  His new wife was a Russian woman, Valentina Brodsky, who Chagall nicknamed ‘Vava.’  ‘This domestic bliss was to be Chagall’s touchstone during this period when his art, and the artist himself, were becoming objects of mounting public interest.’  - from ‘Chagall; Painting as Poetry,’ by Walther & Metzger, published by Taschen in 2012
