Selichot tonight: Preparation for the Days of Awe
We are in the ascent from Tisha B’Av to Sukkot when the full moon reveals all that was hidden during the new moon of Rosh Hashanah.
The Selichot (supplication, forgiveness) prayers are said throughout Elul in the Sephardic tradition. In the Ashkenazi tradition, Selichot starts tonight after midnight and the prayers continue to be said in the early morning through 29 Elul, the eve of Rosh Hashanah.
This piece is considered part of Chagall’s ‘Late Work’ while in France where he lived until his death in 1985. ‘After his return to France, Chagall’s work still remained a poetic metaphor for his turbulent life history, a balancing act negotiating dream and reality, an adventure of the imagination that made the invisible visible, and thus real.’
