The Mishne Tora is a code of Jewish law compiled by Rabbi Moses ben Maimon (RaMBaM) known as Maimonides in Fustat in 1180. This magnificent copy was written three centuries later and embellished with illuminated panels and six large paintings, in the style of the Italian Renaissance. Chapters one through six which are in the Vatican Library contain five illuminated pages. The gold leaf applied to the page with the brilliant tempera paint accounts for use of the term illuminated. - from the The Michael Steinhardt Judaica Collection website
